  • Speaking at SQL Konferenz 2017

    I’m heading back across the Atlantic this February for SQL Konferenz. This is an intimate SQL Server event in Darmstadt (near Frankfurt). I was fortunate to be picked to speak in 2015, but skipped 2016 as the timing wasn’t good. This year, things lined up for me, and I’ll be attending the conference after a short visit to the Redgate offices.

    I will be presenting a talk on Database Devops, updated from last year, and looking at ways in which you can get your database into a better software development process.

    There are a number of other great sessions on all aspects of SQL Server, both the core engine and BI topics. There are also a good selection of presentations in both English and German. Just for fun, I might go to a German one to see if I can follow along. Perhaps I’ll go see the Cloud Service in Azure one.

  • Vote for @SQLBits Sessions (pick me, pick me)

    The SQL Bits sessions are out and it’s time to vote for me. Well, vote for the sessions you’d like to see, but certainly include me in the list. I’ve got a few new ones, and a few that have been popular at other conferences. I am hoping to return to Telford, find a new costume for the party, and have a great week of SQL Server debates, discussions, and inspiration. Last time I did visit IronBirdge. This time, perhaps the birthplace of the modern Olympics and a little running.

    You can view the complete list of sessions and then vote for up to 10. There are some great ones, and honestly, it’s going to be hard to choose 10. I really appreciate how many people have submitted and the work they’ve put into crafting some really exciting presentations.

    I’ve written it before, but SQL Bits is really my favorite conference. It’s large, but not too large. There are lots of people and it’s exciting, but it’s also not too crowded, nor is it a security cumbersome event. Spouses are welcome, even kids, and it’s got a casual atmosphere at night and highly charged with learning and talking SQL all day.

    My hope is that I get to go again, and I get to see lots of you there this spring.

  • SQL in the City Prep

    I’m at the Redgate Software offices this week. I come over to visit the company, my boss and our department, and talk to product development groups a few times a year.

    This time I’ve been mostly focused on the SQL in the City 2016, which is being streamed this year from the office. A room has been set up with a variety of equipment to broadcast our presentations.

    We’ve been shooting some pre-recorded fillers this week as well as practicing our live sessions. I’ve got two tomorrow, one with a co-presenter. Today was practice time, working on timing, delivery, and remembering there’s a camera.

    I’m excited for tomorrow, and things seem to be coming together. Now it’s time to call it a day at the office, get some dinner, and then rehearse a bit more.

  • Using ReadyRoll to Automate Database Migrations

    I like ReadyRoll, and this week at SQL in the City 2017, I get to show some of the product off. I’ll be doing mostly demos and coding, live, with ReadyRoll, sending my code through from development to QA to production.

    Despite the power and ease with which I use SQL Compare, SQL Source Control and the DLM Automation tools, I really like the ReadyRoll paradigm. It’s not better or worse, but it’s a method I’ve been more comfortable using to deploy code to databases. It’s the type of process I’ve had to manually build in the past, but now it’s much easier with the ReadyRoll project and plugin for Visual Studio.

    Join me and see how I use ReadyRoll to write code, track it, and then deploy it to various other environments.

    We’re broadcasting a virtual SQL in the City this year, on December 14/15. The same content is both days, spread out to cover different time zones on each day. I hope you’ll join us and see what Redgate has in store for 2017.
