  • SQL in the City This Fall

    We’ve got a couple of large SQL in the City events coming this fall.  I’m speaking at both, which I think means my boss is happy with my work for Red Gate Software. At least, that’s what I’ll tell myself.
     
    In a little over a week I’ll be in both London and Seattle, delivering a variety of sessions on DBA and development topics. I start the day off with a session for the DBAs with Avoiding a DBA’s worst days with monitoring. This is based on The DBA Team’s 5 Worst Days in a DBA’s Life where we look at some of the situations you can avoid by keeping an eye on your environment. I then cover Version control and CI Fundamentals for databases, looking at how you can get your database code in a VCS and build a Continuous Integration (CI) process. I’ll also cover testing, using the free tSQLt framework to write some tests against your databases.
     
    It’s a quick set of sessions for me, but I’ll be around all day to talk to you about your database delivery, deployment, development, or administration issues. Or just shake your hand if you’d like.
     
    I fly to London for our event on Fri, Oct 24 and then will be in Seattle on Nov 3 for the second stop on the tour. A lot of travel for me, but I’m sure it’s an easier commute for most of you.  I hope you’ll join us and come learn a bit more about SQL Server than you might know today.

  • Smooth Database Deployment at SQL in the City 2014

    One of the themes at Red Gate Software this year has been “ship often, ship safe”. Actually, that’s been a theme (and goal) for us the last few years as we’ve learned how to build software faster, maintain quality, and get features into the hands of our customers. We’ve been working hard on expanding our knowledge , both through tools and education, to help our customers deliver their database software in a better way.

    Grant and I have traveled around the US giving free seminars on database development, deployment, and delivery, with ideas on how you can more easily manage your software pipeline. This fall, we’ve revamped our talks and added a new one on testing, and we’ll be delivering these talks at our 2014 SQL in the City events. We’ll be in London on Oct 24, 2014 and Seattle on Mon, Nov 3, 2014 talking about software, along with a number of our Friends of Red Gate. These will be full day conferences with a variety of DBA related topics featuring a number of speakers that are experts working with SQL Server. Quite a few of our developers and managers will also be available to share our knowledge about the process of building, testing, and deploying software, particularly database driven software. We’d also love to hear about your challenges and issues you face on a regular basis. If you can come, we’d love to meet you.

    Our events are a casual, fun, educational way to learn more about SQL Server. You’ll get ideas and tips for becoming a better developer or DBA that you will want to experiment with and put into place every day to make your job more enjoyable. We hope you join us at one of these events, or at one of our seminars in the future.

  • SQL in the City 2014

    It’s official, we have a couple 2014 SQL in the City events scheduled, covering two countries this fall. Both events are packed into a short time (less than two weeks), so Grant and I have quite a bit of travel ahead of us.
     
    Once again we’ve divided up the sessions into administration for the DBAs and development topics for the developers, but feel free to cross from one to the other. Our theme is “Ship often, ship safe” and we hope to show you how to build better software, faster. Our goal is to help you get your enhancements and patches into production so your customers can make better use of their applications.
     
    London is first, on Oct 24 at Grange St. Paul’s Hotel. The agenda is set with Grant and I delivering a few sessions and a host of Red Gate developers along with some Friends of Red Gate presenting on a variety of topics. We also have a labs you can drop into during the day to gain practical knowledge on how to solve some of your SQL Server problems.
     
    A little over a week later, on November 3, 2014, SQL in the City returns to Seattle, with an all day event the Monday before the Pass Summit. We have a similar agenda, though a few different speakers at the McCaw Hall at Seattle Center.
     
    We do hope you’ll join us at one of the events, and get a day of training on SQL Server, the Red Gate way. We’ll also have a short happy hour afterwards, and Grant and I would love to share a toast with you. Feel free to stop and chat with either of us at anytime we’re not presenting.

  • Branding, Encryption, and Yoga in Cleveland

    It’s just under two weeks to SQL Saturday #241 in Cleveland. This will be my second trip of 2014 and I’m doing some planning for the trip.

    First, Yoga.

    I practice yoga every week and find it to be a good workout as well as a relaxing one. It helps with my flexibility, and since I’m having surgery in a few months, I’m trying to make sure I continue to work muscles. Erin Stellato and I started planning on a class on Friday morning, Feb 7, 2014. It’s the day before SQL Saturday, but since I’ll be in town, it’s a good choice. Erin uses the Inner Bliss Yoga studios, and if you’re interested and want some #sqlyoga, come join us. I’m not sure which class we’ll do, but we’re leaning towards the 9:15 at the River studio. Watch for me to post details on Twitter.

    After yoga (and a shower), it’s time for SQL in the City 2014. We have our first event in the US taking place on Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Holiday Inn in Westlake. It’s free to attend, but we’d like you to register so we can plan for attendees. We have a limit, so please don’t register if you don’t plan on attending. We’ll be talking about database deployment, version control, and continuous integration. It’s an interesting topic, and one that lots of people find interesting and inspiring.

    Saturday is SQL Saturday #241. The schedule has me talking Encryption first at 8:45 and Branding at 11:45am. Please feel free to come to my sessions, or check out Grant’s Statistics or Query Optimization talk. Please also feel free to say “hi” or shake our hands at anytime. My apologies in advance that I won’t make the after-party Saturday night. I need to get home to Denver, so I’ll be leaving a bit before the end of the day to catch a plane.

    If you’re in the Cleveland area, join us Friday for SQL in the City and come on Saturday for SQL Saturday #241. There are also pre-cons taking place on Friday if you don’t want to see us talk deployment and would rather hear Argenis Fernandez talk about disaster recovery or Allen White talk Powershell. They’re both great presenters and $99 is a bargain for their pre-con events.
