I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to enjoy new music today. Listen to a recommendation from someone else.

While traveling I was chatting with a friend about music. They mentioned that they like listening to Tim McGraw. I’m not a big fan of country music, though I have enjoyed a bit more while learning guitar. Johnny Cash especially has been someone whose songs I’ve come to enjoy.

I decided to give it a try, listening to the This is Tim McGraw playlist on Spotify. Not sure if this is a good representation of his music, but it was a place to start.

It’s music that is easy, upbeat, and I could see it being fun to strum along and sing in a group (if I knew the songs). It makes you tap your feet and enjoy the moment.

I don’t know that I prefer it over other genres or that I’ll listen to a lot, but I can appreciate the music and will likely try it a few times.

Today’s tip is to make choices that have a positive impact for others today.

Making an impact for others can be with small or large things. Today, I’m choosing small things. I’m holding the door for others as I go in and out. I’m picking up dishes or glasses in the office for others and taking them to the dishwasher. I am ensuring I use please, thank you, and spend a few minutes chatting with people I don’t see often.

Small things, but they create an engagement and interest in others.

Note: I’m traveling today, so I see more people than I often do.

Today’s tip is to remember an event in your life that was really meaningful.

We asked the volleyball team I was coaching to think of an impactful moment or day in their lives a few years ago. These were teenagers, so they had relatively few experiences to draw on, but some of the answers were interesting. The kids asked me as well, what was an impactful event.

For me, it was my wedding. We don’t pick our parents or children. We pick some of our friends, but they may come and go in our lives. However, we do pick our partner, and hopefully have a long time to enjoy a life with them.

My wife has been the most impactful person in my life, bringing me joy, love, and a wide range of emotions across the last 24 years since we made a commitment. I think about that day often, remembering it and how it changed my life for the better.
