Today’s coping tip is to respond to a difficult situation in a different way.

There are plenty of difficult situations I find myself in, some of which create lots of emotion. Anger, fear, frustration, and more.

One thing I tried to do recently was accept the emotion and then let it go. I didn’t express it back to the person and instead made an internal effort to acknowledge there was something I didn’t like and then take a moment. I stepped back and tried to re-examine the situation as if it were happening to someone else.

I asked myself what role should I play, what was the intent of the other party, what part of the situation am I really responsible for? Doing this helped me to realize that while my emotions were valid, they would have had me become defensive or short and overreact to the situation rather than just focus on my part and my role. I learned some of this from Doing Hard Things.

Hard to describe without giving details, and I don’t want to disclose who/what/where as it’s private. The main thing was making an attempt to respond differently to a situation than I had in the past.

Today’s coping tip is to make time for a friend and have a coffee, meal, or just spend time.

It’s been a busy few months for me. Since Sept 1, I’ve been away from home for 5 trips and 30 days. I leave in a couple days for another one. This has made life a little hectic and frantic, as I’m trying to juggle many tasks with limited time.

I made lunch plans with a friend a couple times and we ended up cancelling, each of us getting busy once. We lined up a third date between my trips, and even though I was busy, I decided to keep the plans. I’ve neglected some Denver friends, and I needed to stop that.

My wife questioned whether I had the time, which was fair. I was busy, and this lunch meant I’d be working late that night, but getting some time with a good friend, recharging my mental state, and taking a break were important.

    I’m glad I did it.

Today’s coping tip is to set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.

For me, I’m going away from primary work to secondary work. I’ve been working on a head coaching certification (part of my goals) and I’m about 40% in. I want to get to 75% this month.

Today’s coping tip is to identify three things that give you hope for the future.

    1. The creativity and passion of youth
    2. The drive from many people who build software to do it better
    3. Some medical work that has my wife and me feeling better than the past few years
