  • All I want for Christmas

It’s the Christmas holiday, and many of you might be already out celebrating and away from work this week. Today is usually a day off for many companies, with last minute preparations for the celebrations this weekend.

Those of us working in IT are very lucky for the most part. We have good jobs, jobs that don’t require heavy physical exertions, we work in offices not in inclement weather, and we are paid well relative to many other professions.

I’m not Santa Claus, but I’ll offer up a virtual knee for this holiday poll:

What would you like to get for Christmas?

I’m looking for anything technology related, for work, for fun, or for the family. It doesn’t even have to require electricity, but what fun gift would you like to get this year? Have some fun and dream a little, but not too much. Someone close to you might read your answer and actually pick out the gift for you if it’s affordable and reasonable.

For me, there’s not much I want or need in the technology space, and I’m actually trying to reduce the amount of technology stuff I have and work “lighter” with less stuff. However the one thing that I don’t need, but I’d like, is an Airport Extreme router that I can mount in the kitchen, add a set of speakers, and plug in my iPhone for music while I cook.

  • Snack Attack

    One of my favorite snacks

This editorial was originally published on Jan 11, 2007 and is being re-run as Steve is on vacation.

OK, I’ve done a bunch of editorials on security this week. It’s been in the news, it’s a new year, everyone’s making resolutions to implement better security, some bugs were found, so security has been a topic. Actually it was last week when I found these links and started sketching topics, but that’s another story.

So today I wanted to take a break from the serious stuff. I found this link awhile back, Snacksby, which is an interesting idea. It’s an idea that a friend actually pitched something similar to me years ago, but she never got it going. So with that idea, this week’s poll is:

What’s Your Favorite Snack while working?

I know, I know, not a great poll question for the IT crowd, but maybe something will strike your fancy. Maybe you’ll discover a new snack from a response from someone else. Maybe I’ll get to be a spokesman.

The only thing that I’ve usually craved when I’m working, and it’s pretty rare, is a Dairy Queen Blizzard, preferable something with peanut butter in it. There used to be one a block over when I worked in Virginia as a developer. The team would walk over a few times a week when the weather was warm for a break.

Since then I usually have water and diet coke at my side, but that’s about it. Still once in awhile I swing by for an afternoon snack and quick sugar rush.

  • Happy Halloween 2011

    Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloweento everyone out there. It’s the holiday that my kids love, with the chance to dress up and pretend to be something else for the day. I haven’t dressed up in years, but I still remember being a young IT guy, coming into work at 7am before everyone else with a gorilla mask and hands, in a suit and getting a few screams from people walking into the office.

It’s a vacation day for me, taking a break between my trip last week for SQL in the City and heading to SQL Server Connections tomorrow. Hopefully I’m skiing, and then taking the kids out tonight for some fun before I leave town tomorrow.

It’s not a holiday for most people, but I hope you have a quiet and productive day. For a little entertainment, I’ve got a blooper real below you can enjoy.
