  • Learn tSQLt and Unit Testing in Philadelphia

    SQL Saturday #390 is in Philadelphia on June 6, 2015. This is my second time attending the event, and not only am I speaking on Saturday, but I’ll be delivering information on Friday at a pre-con.

    My first SQL Saturday pre-con is taking place in Philly. I’m lucky to be asked by Sebastian Meine to co-present a day of training. We’re delivering a precon on Unit Testing in SQL Server with tSQLt. It’s available for the low price of only $99.99 now, with the price rising to $149.99 when the event begins.

    We’ll be covering quite a bit of the framework, showing you the ways in which you can write tests with examples and code that you can run that day. We’d like you to bring a laptop to write tests along with us, but we’ll have the code available later if you want to test back at the office. Here’s our agenda.

    Sebastian is the owner and developer of the tSQLt framework, which I’ve been using quite a bit over the last few years. It’s an amazing project, and really expands the ability of SQL Server developers to build better code and prevent regression issues in their applications. Quite a few SQL Server MVPs and highly successful consultants are using the framework, and I’d urge you to give it a try.

    Database Source Control

    If you’re in town on Thursday and want to learn about Version Controlling your databases, Redgate is also working with Ike Ellis to put on a full-day workshop covering Database Source Control. It’s $500 for the day, and you’ll get some in-depth knowledge on how to work with SQL Server code and version control as well as participate in hands-on labs that will give you the skills to implement the processes yourself.   • Implementing Continuous Integration in Redmond

    On May 15, 2015, Redgate Software and one of our partners, Northwest Cadence, will be presenting one of the DLM Training Workshops I helped build in Redmond, WA. I’m excited to be traveling up to WA for the event and helping support Dan Wood as he delivers the training on Continuous Integration (CI).

    This is our Database Continuous Integration workshop, and it’s a great way to learn how you can take your database code and get it automatically tested and built in a CI process. CI has taken hold in many parts of the software industry, but not so much databases.

    This workshop uses the Redgate tools, which make the process easier. However you can just use concepts with your own scripting or other tools. Our goal here is to help you get comfortable with the idea of CI and

    Requirements

    The workshop assumes you have your database in a version control system (VCS). If you don’t, then you should. We have a workshop on using source control with databases as well, but really you should just script our your database and put is in SVN, Git, or something. Or just use SQL Source Control, which makes it really easy.

    The other requirement if you have a laptop with you. We’ve built a number of labs, and we really, really want you to try and implement this yourself. We’ll provide a virtual machine up in the cloud, but we want you to have the chance to actually do the work.

    SQL Saturday #393 – Redmond

    Our workshop is the Friday before SQL Saturday #393 in Redmond, WA. That’s a free event, and you can come there as well. I’ll be delivering a talk there, hopefully on testing, which is certainly important to CI.

    Either way, you can get a full day of in depth training on Friday at the workshop, and then a variety of topics on Saturday at the SQL Saturday event.

  • Speaking at SQL Saturday #389 – Huntington Beach

    I’ll be traveling to CA next month for SQL Saturday #389 – Huntington Beach as well as a Red Gate DLM training session run by Ike Ellis. I’m assisting Ike in running a Database Continuous Integration class. It’s a paid for event, but you’ll learn how to set up and run a CI process with your database.

    CI is all the rage and companies are improving their development processes, building applications faster with it. We go into depth, using Red Gate tools, on how you can get your database development working in a CI environment, and integrate it closely with your application development work.

    I don’t have details on my SQL Saturday session, but that should be coming soon. I will do a Red Gate presentation during lunch, so if you want to know how we can help you or have questions, come by at lunch.

    It’s amazing to think I’ve been gone 10 days, out of the country. SQL Bits was amazing, and still is the best SQL Server conference in the world I’ve seen. I haven’t been to them all, but this is the best of those I go to.

    Ireland was fantastic, and a very warm welcome for a day of training and then a talk at the Dublin SQL Server User Group. Some really interesting questions for me to blog about and answer in the next few weeks.

    I saw some neat SQL Server tips, tricks, ideas, and inspirations, which is always a good thing as it motivates me to do more and learn more as my career progresses.

    An amazing gift from the crew at SQL Bits. My own speaker shirt. I was quite touched and I really appreciate the effort they went to. I know what I’ll be wearing next year.

    A few people were jealous, since the "regular" speaker shirts were blue polos. I guess I stand out a bit from them. The Friday night party was fun, with the Captain making an appearance.
