  • Daily Coping 9 Apr 2021

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to mentally scan your body and notice what it is feeling today.

I do this more and more all the time. A few week ago I hurt by back while trying to drag the front end loaded bucket around on the ground. I should know better, and I lost about a week of being able to move without pain.

Today, I’m feeling good. It’s a few days after coming back from a trip, where I walked quite a bit. I remembered to wear my ankle brace walking around town, I took things slower, to the chagrin of my wife. She likes to walk fast, but she’s adjusting with me. I stood on hard concrete floors, but then I got back to yoga and some weight lifting this week.

I feel good. There are some minor aches and pains, a slightly tight back, some muscle soreness from work. No neck pain, fingers feel good (which is important), my eyes aren’t too tired after a good night’s sleep. Knees good.

Ready to keep moving forward in life.

Today’s tip is to appreciate something that went well in life recently.

For me, I’m going to pick my trip last weekend. I went on a volleyball tournament trip, coaching a team in Philadelphia. The first real test of our team, and it was good. Our results were mixed, but we learned a lot about the team and where to go in the future.

It was also interesting traveling again, being on an airplane, hotel, in a big city, etc. It’s not “normal”, and it wasn’t always easy, but it was a good trip and I’m glad I went.

  • Help Build an Amazing Summit in 2021

For a good portion of my career, I’ve been going to the annual Summit in the fall with lots of my fellow SQL Server/Data Platform professionals. I have been to 16 or 17 before last fall’s virtual one.

This year, Redgate has purchased the trademark and brand for the Summit, and they are looking to run a virtual event in the fall. Like many other events of the last year, this will be free, and I’m excited to see how this goes.

Redgate is looking for feedback from those of you that have attended Summits in the past, trying to understand what worked well and what didn’t. They are looking to create a memorable event and evolve the Summit into something better in the future.

Fill out the survey before Apr 15 and you could win a Peloton bike. Not a bad prize for sharing some thoughts on an event I suspect many of you enjoyed and would like to see come back.

Today’s tip is to find joy in a simple thing today.

One of the things I’ve tried to add to my life across the decades is to enjoy the small and simple things I experience. I do try to take a few minutes to stop and enjoy life.

It snowed today, and the world is white, a little chilly (22F/-5C), calm, and beautiful. I feel good, and I took a few minutes to look at the world and appreciate the good fortunate I have in life.
