I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here.

Today’s tip is to find a caring calming phrase to say to yourself when feeling low.

This is really needed these days, as I find emotions and reactions amplified by the stress of the world. I have lots of empathy for others, and this affects me. I also find myself regularly annoyed by those that don’t display this, whether online or in person.

What’s more frustrating is that often I know these are people that would display empathy for those they know, but they lose that in the wider perspective the challenges in the world.

“There is a lot of good in the world.”

That’s my phrase. I remember that there are lots of good people looking to help and support others. There are lots of people working to improve themselves and others. There are lots of positive things, even when I disagree with some of the methods.

Despite all those I think aren’t doing this, there are significant numbers that are, and that gives me hope.

Today’s tip is to talk kindly to yourself like you would to someone you love.

The power of words can be incredible. I find far, far too many people discount words for actions. They also discount the impact of their words.

Perhaps this is one reason I find most people to be a worse version of themselves online.

In any case, one thing that a couple decades of parenting has taught me is to provide support with responsibility and accountability. I give kind words at the same time I demand things. I recognize the value of recognizing the good, even when other things go wrong.

For me, I didn’t get enough done this weekend, but I did get some things done, including some relaxing time. I need to remember to appreciate what I did, even while I may demand more from myself in the future.

Today’s tip is to make time to do something you really enjoy.

I’ll be on holiday, but my plan is to spend some time playing guitar, sitting on the balcony of our condo and enjoying the afternoon.

If the weather is bad, I’ll see by the window.

Today’s tip is to let go of being busy. Allow yourself to take some breaks today.

I’m on holiday today, a welcome break as I try to comply with my 60% taken by the end of this month. As a result, I’m not trying to be busy. I asked my wife if we could take a couple days and just relax. No horses, no chores, no plans.

We’ll pack a few clothes, which is really the biggest stress item today. Then we’ll put the dogs in the car and drive to the mountains to stay for a few days.

    A welcome break.
