I’ve started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here.

Today’s tip is to find a joyful way of being physically active (indoors or out).

I really enjoy yoga. It is a part of my life that moves my body, works it, and also relaxes my mind. It’s amazing how repeating 10 poses can both refresh and exhaust me.

One of the things I’ve done as the weather has improved is spend time outdoors doing yoga. I can’t go to the gym, so I’ve followed some recorded classes, putting my laptop or phone under a tree and spreading a mat nearby.

I’ve even gotten my kids out there a few times, which has been fantastic.

If you want to try something, I like Yoga with Tim and the Lifetime recorded classes.

Today’s tip is to note the upsides during the lockdown, however small.

There are a number of upsides for me.

    1. More time with my kids, who are in college or out.
    2. I spend more time cooking, lower cost, building skills, family spends time together
    3. I play guitar more, especially with less travel
    4. Life is slower, and I can catch up on things I’d let go around the ranch.

Today’s tip is smile and be friendly, even when you’re social distancing.

I try to smile and wave a lot at people. I think that has been one reason I get through life with relatively little conflict.

Wearing masks the last couple months has taken that away from me. I have tried to look at myself when smiling with a mark, and you see some of the signs, but wrinkle your nose in disgust and you see similar ones outside the mask.

Instead, I’ve tried to send more kind words out, since I can’t smile. However, when I am without a mask, I do try to smile more, especially at service workers who are helping us all out with their efforts and their risk.

Today’s tip is show your appreciation to those who are helping others.

There are many people helping others these days. Healthcare workers, activists, and plenty of “essential” workers that have been risking their own health for income, for employment, and to provide for others.

In my area, many of these people have to wear masks, by law (or decree), all day while working. I can see many of them sigh with relief when they can remove a mask.

Paul Randal and Tim Radney have been printing lots of masks. Both of them have been graciously donating these to people around the US, along with plenty of others in the SQL Community. Redgate donated some money for supplies, and I donated some as well when I asked them to send me masks.

I’ve been carrying these around in my car, bringing them into various businesses, groceries, gas stations, and more. I’m offering these to workers, including some nurses I know, to ease the pain of wearing masks all day long.
