High Security Prices–Always Encrypted 2019 needs Datacenter Edition

I was recently doing some work on Always Encrypted in SQL Server 2019 and needed to set up an HGS server. I went through most of the setup, and then encountered this issue:

After embarrassing myself to other MVPs and Microsoft, I realized I hadn’t read the requirements for the secure enclaves. I need 2 machines, but the SQL Server has to run on Windows 10 or Windows 2019 Server – Datacenter Edition.

Grrr, I had built a machine for this and need to tear it down and restart the process. It’s not that hard, but it’s annoying.

I should learn to read more carefully.

A Lost Day

I’m writing this in advance, as I usually recommend for all bloggers, because this is a lost day for me. I’m not going to experience May 27th, 2019 on the Earth. This happened to me last year as well, when I missed Oct 28, 2018, never setting foot on the ground anywhere on Earth.

Some of you have experienced this, some not, but it’s interesting for me. I actually left yesterday, May 26th, from Denver to get on a plane. Around 11pm at night, my flight left San Francisco heading west. The next time I’ll set foot on the ground will be Tuesday, My 28, in Sydney, Australia.

I don’t actually lose time, at least human time, which is a construct that we get around with our extremely fast air transport. In this case, I cross the International Dateline heading West, so by the time the plane lands, it will be Tuesday and I’ll have missed Monday.

Of course, it will just feel like a long trip to me and when I arrive, it will likely feel like Monday evening to my body. Hopefully I’ll get some sleep.

The SQL Change Automation in SSMS Beta

Give it a try, as the beta is out. I’ve been watching this product and getting updates for the last six months or so and lately I’ve been pushing to get this out. It’s close enough to be useful and helpful for me, and I wanted to get other feedback.

Someone listened and you can now try this. If you’ve been using SCA (SQL Change Automation) in VS, now you can work in SSMS as well. give it a try and let us have your feedback. I’m excited to get migration based development into SSMS.

I’m doing a tour of Australia and New Zealand with our SQL in the City crew. We’re going to be in Brisbane, Christchurch, and Melbourne on three consecutive weeks.

Register today for Brisbane, Christchurch, and Melbourne. You can some see me talk about compliant development strategies. Privacy legislation is increasing around the world, and Australia is one of the countries leading the way.

New Zealand is thinking of passing more laws, so the ideas will be applicable there, but really, these are just good ideas. While we have solutions from Redgate, and I’d love you to use our tools, I also want more compliant development taking place everywhere.

I’ve heard wonderful things about Melbourne as a vibrant, high tech city, and I know that privacy and security are important topics to people there. I hope to see lots of you coming out to see how your SQL Server development can go faster, while avoiding any potential issues with data breaches.
