Daily Coping 2 Jun 2022

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to make choices that have a positive impact for others today.

Making an impact for others can be with small or large things. Today, I’m choosing small things. I’m holding the door for others as I go in and out. I’m picking up dishes or glasses in the office for others and taking them to the dishwasher. I am ensuring I use please, thank you, and spend a few minutes chatting with people I don’t see often.

Small things, but they create an engagement and interest in others.

Note: I’m traveling today, so I see more people than I often do.

Halfway through the craziness

Awhile back I wrote about my crazy schedule. I’m about halfway through. The last couple months have been:

  • London (SQL Bits)
  • Syracuse (daughter visit)
  • Las Vegas (volleyball)
  • Chicago (volleyball)
  • Los Angeles (work)
  • Reno (volleyball)
  • Cambridge/Brussels (work/Techorama)
  • ankle surgery
  • Amsterdam/Lingen (Datagrillen)

I’m on that last trip now, with the speaker dinner tonight for DataGrillen. From here I have:

  • Fort Robinson, NE ( camping vacation)
  • Austin (VS Live)
  • Austin (work, separate trip)
  • Indian Creek (camping vacation)

All in June. Then a break before:

  • New Jersey (SQL Saturday)
  • Baton Rouge (SQL Saturday)
  • Redmond (VS Live)
  • Los Angeles (tentative)
  • Hawaii (vacation)

That gets me through the summer. September will have some travel back to the UK and perhaps elsewhere, but Sept and Oct are fuzzy.

It’s a crazy life at times, but at the same time, it’s an amazing one. I’m having fun, I love getting to experience new place and culture with my wife, see friend and meet new people at events, and keep busy.

Tough at times, but overall, it’s my choice and I am managing my career with my boss. I’m also enjoying 2022.

Republish: Production Subsets

Back on the road this week, for DataGrillen this time. I’m in Germany and hopefully enjoying the trip as I travel with a boot.

While I’m at the event, you get to read about Production Subsets, something I think is critical for a DevOps, agile flow that is efficient.

Daily Coping 1 Jun 2022

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to remember an event in your life that was really meaningful.

We asked the volleyball team I was coaching to think of an impactful moment or day in their lives a few years ago. These were teenagers, so they had relatively few experiences to draw on, but some of the answers were interesting. The kids asked me as well, what was an impactful event.

For me, it was my wedding. We don’t pick our parents or children. We pick some of our friends, but they may come and go in our lives. However, we do pick our partner, and hopefully have a long time to enjoy a life with them.

My wife has been the most impactful person in my life, bringing me joy, love, and a wide range of emotions across the last 24 years since we made a commitment. I think about that day often, remembering it and how it changed my life for the better.
