Daily Coping 27 May 2022

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to think about a journey you are on in life and your progress.

This is a small journey, with a bit of irony today.

I’ve been practicing yoga for about a decade. My wife got me to try it and I loved it. I’ve moved through a few studios, and even have a few favorites on YouTube.

In all that time, one of the things I’ve heard often from various instructors is “knee to nose” from downward dog. This involves being on your hands and feet, in an inverted “V” position.

DownwardDog

From here, you lift one leg, then you bring it under your body, bending the knee and bending your spine, attempting to touch your knee to your nose. When I first tried this, I could see my knee coming close to my face, but I never thought it would touch.

In fact, for over 9 years, I have tried sometimes but often not, to touch my knee to my nose. It’s never really been close.

In early 2022, I changed my diet and lost some weight. As I moved below 220 lbs, I could get the knee closer. A couple weeks ago, I tried again one day and my knee brushed my nose. I almost fell because I was shocked. Only the right knee, but the left one is close and I did the right once three times that day.

Quite the journey for me.

Not today, however. I have ankle surgery today, so no yoga, or not much, for a few weeks.

Daily Coping 26 May 2022

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to look up at the sky, remember we are all part of something bigger.

I’m flying today, leaving Brussels bound for the US. I love watching the sky at times during the flight, seeing the world from above, seeing the sky stretching out so far. It’s wonderful and amazing when you can see a long distance.

As I wander through life, at home or traveling in a different land, I notice the sky. I think some of it is because Colorado is hilly and we can often see nature for a long distance. One of my favorite pix was up in the mountains, skiing with my sons. They are the two closest in this shot, but I love the sky and rainbow.

This is a decent slope downhill (blue run), and the view for miles is incredible with this sky.

Republish: It’s Not Yours

I’m still at Techorama.

Check out It’s Not Yours from the past. For some reason I didn’t get it on this blog, so here it is:

It’s Not Yours

For most of my career, I’ve felt a tie to the systems I’ve managed or the code I’ve written. I’ve often said that a part of the code was mine, because it was something I’d written. Having some ownership of your work has often meant more pride in ensuring things are well implemented. The same thing goes for administering databases. When an employee feels personally responsible and accountable for  the database and its contents, usually they do a better job.

Most of us know that the systems we manage and the data they contain aren’t really “ours”, no matter how we might refer to them in conversation. We know that ultimately the data, applications, and hardware belong to our employers. Or, we should know that.

Apparently not everyone does. A contractor just pleaded guilty to stealing classified information from the US National Security Agency, about 50GB worth of data. This isn’t a case of spying or malicious intent. Instead, the report is that the employee was a hoarder, just keeping copies of data for some unknown reason. Hopefully that’s true.

Many of us will have copies of data that we use for different purposes. We might be building software, or testing queries, or some other task that requires data. We might want to conduct more in depth analysis in our spare time. Those are all positive goals, but none of them mean that we should have copies of data without authorization. We don’t own the data, and we should always be sure if we are moving data to other systems, that those systems are secure and someone else has approved the action.

This becomes more important all the time. We have enough issues with data security and keeping our information away from hackers. We make plenty of mistakes with configuration in authorized development and test systems. There’s no reason to add to the issues by treating data as our own personal asset, no matter how good your intentions.

Daily Coping 25 May 2022

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to share photos of 3 things you find meaningful or memorable.

I’m more than halfway through life. I really believe most of my life is behind me, and I look forward to seeing others start to make the world better and find their path through life.

Three very memorable photos I found today were my kids graduating. My oldest from college, and my two youngest from high school. I am proud of what they’ve done in their short lives and I look forward to seeing where they go.
