Daily Coping 8 Feb 2023

Today’s coping tip is to go to bed in good time and allow yourself to recharge.

I need this reminder. Lately I’ve struggled to sleep well, through the night, and I’ve had some rough mornings. It seems this usually happens when I have early meetings, which makes things even worse.

I’m making it a point to get to bed by 10 for a few days and see if that helps me at all.

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQL Server Central newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

  1. God yes! I too have this issue being a night owl. One thing I do to try and combat this is do my exercise routine after work so by the time I’m done I’m worn out and it makes it easier to fall asleep. I ‘ve read where some say this is a bad idea, exercising so close to bedtime but I disagree. I started doing that in my mid-20’s and it always resulted in a solid nights rest, to the point where in teh AM when my alarm went off I sometimes actually jumped out of bed. Twenty years later its different, no jumping out of any bed but the exercising at night does still work for helping me go to sleep when I should be going to sleep and not being a night owl.

The other benefit is it means you can get up earlier and I’ve always head that the earlier you get up teh better for your heal, that is assuming plenty of hours of sleep.

My wife likes late exercise, but for me the gym is a morning or midday break. Plus since I usually cook, I’m not thrilled with late workouts. I’ve done it, but it doesn’t work for my life.

Going to bed early for a few days has helped

    • After hours work outs do make it difficult to do a normal dinner time routine. I’d love to do my workout earlier but the job makes it impractical to try and step away for 1.5 to 2 hours during teh work day although I have done it a few times. We have a gym on a floor within the building I’m in so I don’t have to drive anywhere to workout and that curs down on teh time but I still can’t do all I need to in less than 1.5 hours.
