The New Normal Annoyances

Recently I re-ran an old editorial on annoyances. The world of work has changed for many of us. For the last few months, many of us have previously worked in offices have had to work at home. We often have partners, roommates, spouses, kids, pets, and more that distract us from the environment we’re used to being in while working on the data platform.

I don’t know how the world of work will change, but I do know it will. As I write this, I’m not sure when I’ll actually be able to go back to an office to work. While I don’t go often, I am looking forward to spending a few days here and there with others when I’m able. What I’m not sure about is whether I’ll see lots of people or just a few. Will there be rotations of who’s in the office during the week? Will I, as an outsider, be able to meet with the large variety of developers I’m used to seeing, or am I an infection vector to be avoided?

I suspect that world of remote work will grow for many data professionals. It’s been years since I needed to touch a physical server, and with the changes I’ve seen in many environments, it might not be quite as critical for many of us to show up and meet in a room every week. At the same time, I do think we’ve lost some of the ability to easily collaborate and coordinate our thoughts while we’re remote.

Now that we’ve had a few months of a different way of working, I wonder if you have any new annoyances that bother you. For me, having more people at home has been a bit of a challenge as noise is a problem at times. It’s not bad, but it’s different than it was in 2019.

I’ll also say that while meetings seem to be starting on time more often, I find we still have plenty of audio issues, and sometimes video issues. I also find that it’s hard to decide when to talk and when I want to avoid interrupting someone. It seems that we have different delays in hearing each other at times, so we end up with a bit of a talking collision. Overall, however, I’m impressed and surprised at just how smoothly things are going.

I’m sure many of you are finding new challenges at home. Some from virtual school, perhaps some frustration still from your setup at home, or maybe there’s something else. A few of you might not like the remote meetings and still not be used to them. I think that no matter how you feel, many of us are still going to need to adjust the way we work and learn to cope with our new annoyances for awhile.

Daily Coping 22 Sep 2020

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here.

Today’s tip is to find a caring calming phrase to say to yourself when feeling low.

This is really needed these days, as I find emotions and reactions amplified by the stress of the world. I have lots of empathy for others, and this affects me. I also find myself regularly annoyed by those that don’t display this, whether online or in person.

What’s more frustrating is that often I know these are people that would display empathy for those they know, but they lose that in the wider perspective the challenges in the world.

“There is a lot of good in the world.”

That’s my phrase. I remember that there are lots of good people looking to help and support others. There are lots of people working to improve themselves and others. There are lots of positive things, even when I disagree with some of the methods.

Despite all those I think aren’t doing this, there are significant numbers that are, and that gives me hope.

Better Productivity: Cycling the Windows Clipboard in Windows 10

A quick tip I learned, that has become handy for me.

Tl;dr: Try Win+V

Often I am moving lots of information between different applications. I might do some editing, some code movement, even grabbing notes for reporting feedback to dev teams or something else. I may need 2-3 pieces of info, and make heavy use of the Windows Clipboard.

However, sometimes an app is running slow, and I might end up cutting a second piece of data before pasting in the first one. I ran cross this tip recently, which was really handy.

Using the Windows key and V, I can get a list of a few items that I’ve recently put on the clipboard. While writing this piece, he’s an image (actually a picture) of what my Win+V looks like.

As you can see, I have a few items I can pick from. I can arrow up and down and then hit Enter to insert the pasted item. I can also use the mouse.

You can ensure this is enabled in your control panel (settings). Click Win+I to get this and search for Clipboard. In there, the history item is what you want to enable.

A little trick, but it keeps me from slowing down when I’m trying to get a few things done at once.

Daily Coping 21 Sep 2020

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here.

Today’s tip is to talk kindly to yourself like you would to someone you love.

The power of words can be incredible. I find far, far too many people discount words for actions. They also discount the impact of their words.

Perhaps this is one reason I find most people to be a worse version of themselves online.

In any case, one thing that a couple decades of parenting has taught me is to provide support with responsibility and accountability. I give kind words at the same time I demand things. I recognize the value of recognizing the good, even when other things go wrong.

For me, I didn’t get enough done this weekend, but I did get some things done, including some relaxing time. I need to remember to appreciate what I did, even while I may demand more from myself in the future.
